Tourney Prep - Professional Poker Player Style

OK, one day until tourney night and I’m in full prep mode.

I should receive my iPod nano today, from UPS:

Nov 17, 2005 6:12 A.M. MINNEAPOLIS, MN, US OUT FOR DELIVERY

Woo hoo! Well, either that or somebody else ordered me something from PokerStars, and if so, thanks!

So now all I need to do is get some big ass headphone and sunglasses and I’ll have the “look” down.

As far as “skill”. Well, I am a Professional Poker Player (TM) (not to mention the acknowledged 21st best poker playing blogger in the world), so in reality I’ve already got that covered. However, you can never really know too much, right?

So I watched the 2005 WSOP final table and learned that if you’re the short stack at the table, just wait around a bit and let others knock each other out and you can win. That’s good because I occasionally find myself short stacked.

I have also decided I should read up a bit, but due to time constraints I need to limit myself to one book. What to choose? I decided my only real choices were Phil Hellmuth’s “Play Poker Like the Pros” or Dan Harrington’s “Harrington on Hold’Em”. Negating the fact that HoH is actually about tournaments, I decided to take a more objective view.

Really it just comes down to the fact that Hellmuth has 9 bracelets and Harrington only has 1. ‘Nuff said.

Well, that and with Hellmuth I don’t have to learn things like “position”, “q”, “odds” or “math”. I just need to know about eagles, mice and such. Much easier.

So I read parts of Hellmuth’s book again! Wow! Did you know he cleaned up in games at Madison! Awesome! Eagles! Mice! All I know is that the boys at the game tomorrow better look out!

Surprised that you read Hellmuth’s book over HOH. Not to trash Hellmuth. He is a great player, but that book is horrible. Lions and Tigers and Bears oh my!!

Soar like an Eagle and eat those mice tomorrow.

  2. Umm…yeah. It was a jopke :)

Sorry, I guess I should have made it more clear.

I’m a little slow today. :D I didn’t even read the next to last paragraph I guess.

    Brain fart kid - out

At least Phil can spell poker.

And what is 2+2? Why can’t they just write 4? I don’t trust any of the math in those books.

  5. Exactly. What’s with all the math? If the cards look pretty you should bet and raise or whatever.

I prefer to only play cards whose combined squre root is a prime number (or when multiplied is my birthday). That way I don’t get to bogged down in the math of calculating M outs, or the q’ing odds.

You’re just another wannabe poseur. If you were a real tournament player, you wouldn’t have forgotten to mention that wearing a baseball cap is also essential to getting the look down.

  8. Oh crap, I totally forgot about “m”. See, that’s why HoH sucks, too many “things”. :) I’m going to have to look into this prime number square root thing, but that sounds like math so…

  9. Damnit! I knew I was forgetting something…I’ll get one, don’t worry… :)

Does Phil wear his glasses, hat and iPod when he plays online?

  11. pfym.net says:

I only play cards with pictures or Letters on them that way I can avoid having to do any math at the table :/

Hey, did you get your ipod yet? I got mine today and it wasn’t a nano, it was the 20GB version. I wonder if anyone actually got a nano.

  13. play the short stack!!! Go Go GO!

  14. Next time you need to add Ranting, Crying and talkig only about yourself to your practice list oh yeah raise, re-raise as much as possible with 77.
