While nothing compared to those suffering through the hurricanes, just a quick update…

Our power came back on at about 9PM on Friday night. They teased us by flipping it on for about 10 seconds, then back off for about 20 minutes. We knew it was close then and when it came on you could hear cheers throughout the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, the cable was down.

Which meant the Internet was down.

We’re talking not even a signal. The stupid box wouldn’t even set the time or anything. You don’t realize how much you miss Internet access until it’s gone. Ditto for TV. It’s just awesome to get 1 channel because you don’t have an antennae :)

We got cable (and Internet) back Sunday at 5PM and life in my neck of the woods is back to normal. There’s still a lot of cleanup to do in the area, but it’s getting there.

(Once again, don’t tell me how good I have it compared to the hurricane victims, I acknowledged that, just relax.)

I’m still one of the 80,000 people in the Northern Twin Cities without power. Things are potentially looking better though as there is now power 2 blocks away. Of course, there is also a downed electical pole nearby which may affect things, but I’m not sure the path my power takes.

It could be worse though. The neighboring suburb (Fridley) only has 2 of 11 wells working and their sewer system is not working. Yikes. At least my water heater is gas, so hot showers are still available.

I don’t have much cleanup to do, but there has been plenty going on around the neighborhood. My brother lost two willow trees at his rental property, both of which proceeded to fall into his neighbor’s yard.

I took some pictures last night, some are below, but there are a few more (and they’re bigger) at my gallery . The first 3 are at my brother’s house, the last one is at a neighbors.

Not much to report on the poker front lately. I didn’t play in the WPBT tourney for a couple reasons, the most important was that my wife and I had something to do together.

So last night I putzed around a bit, getting ready to settle in for the season premier of Lost when I start to hear tornado sirens.

Crap.

Now I’m not the type to quickly scurry for the basement, I tend to wait a bit and see what happens, so I held tight. Then the power flickers a couple of times, goes out, comes back and then once again goes out for good at about 7:15PM (CDT).

Crap.

The winds were terrible, they say up to 70mph or so. I have a couple of large branches down, but a lot of my neighbors have whole trees that were uprooted. I’m still without power as of this morning. My lunch plans have changed so that I don’t let the leftover Thai go bad :)

Now, don’t get me wrong, I know there are much, much worse off people out there right now. In other words, I’m not comparing my situation to those who are suffering through hurricanes and such, so don’t freak out or anything…

It would be good to have power again though, after all, Survivor is on tonight…I’m already downloading the Lost season premiere. Oh, and I have things going on the next couple of nights that require Internet access and therefore power.

Thanks Princess for the call. The family is OK which is what’s important. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not that bad.

OK, how about a little actual poker status content for a change?

After spending some awesome quality time with the love of my life, I found myself sitting on the La-Z-Boy at 11pm with nothing to do. Well, that’s not totally true, but it was late and I thought I could put off the hard thinking until later.

I sidled up to a table at Party Poker and played for a total of 35 minutes and, for the first time in quite a while, I posted a decent profit.

Woo hoo!

I actually played pretty well too. I felt good about it and think I played things pretty much correctly including my rockets from the BB. Oh, and flopping a full house with K3o from the big blind. Somebody even made a baby flush on the river so I was able to get something (not as much as I’d like since the board had KK which scared everybody else).

All in all, a short session, but one that showed me that I’m not a total idiot when it comes to this. When you don’t play too often, when the downside of variance hits, it seems like you never win since every session for a long time is bad (and I’m not counting the blogger table, those are just for fun). Hopefully I’m back to playing well again and I can start to see some profits, that’d be a nice change.
