I was back at Party on Monday night looking to take advantage of some free time in order to grind out some of the rest of my Party bonus. By the end of the night I played an additional 400 hands.
I’d give up every last one of them if I could and consider the time spent as pennance.
Wow, what a run. Let’s rephrase that: What a bad run.
I started by playing 2 Party tables and one InterPoker table in order to hopefully hit pocket Aces. The first thing I tried was to use GameTime+ on a Crypto skin. It works beautifully and I feel dumb now for not using it earlier. The fact that GT+ works with any site supported by PokerTracker will cause me to use that over PlayerView, even if PV may be “better”. I play at a ton of Crypto sites, and I want to be able to use it there too, so that eliminates PV.
I played an hour on InterPoker, get zero aces and logged off up 1BB. I then pull up another Party 1/2 table to get some more hands in. During this time I’m down 2BB on one table and, hold on, down 17BB on the other. I proceed to hold even on the third for a while before Mrs. H comes up to watch a little TV. I log off and decide that I can appease the poker gods by spending some quality time with her. We watch a little TV and then she heads to bed.
I jump back to the laptop hoping that my karma is is back in check and pull up a couple more tables. I’m holding about even on both (averaged, I was a bit down on one, a bit up on the other) when I notice a couple
It was all downhill from there.
Pauly, Maudie and I chit chat a bit (in general terms, didn’t really let on that we knew each other) and I experienced what I call “The Pauly Effect”. Every time I’ve played with him, Pauly is able to loosen up the table. Maybe it’s because he’s slumming at my lower level, but whatever the case, he gets the table loosened up a bit and bets are flying. No need to worry if a hand will be raked or not now.
After a bit I get the hand that put me over the edge for the night. It’s not even a bad beat, I was behind the whole time, so I’m not complaining, but it just capped off a bad night.
First off, I admit I was suffering a little bit of tilt. Nothing crazy, but I was frustrated with myself. I had totally misplayed a number of hands that night, some of them ended up winners, but for about half as much as I should have got from people. Some of them were big hands that I didn’t play hard and let people stay in cheaply and I ended up getting rivered. While some of those were “bad beats”, it was because I played them horribly and let people stay in. Totally my fault, I just wasn’t playing well. I was playing very, very weak earlier and I resolved to correct that on this hand.
Talk about bad timing.
I won’t bore you with the details, just suffice it to say that I flopped the baby set from the SB and filled up on the turn. The only problem was that the Villan just happened to make his larger set on the flop and of course filled up on the turn also. We capped the turn and the river and a nice 24BB pot slides across the table and I’m left stunned.
Maybe I played too aggressively. I sure wasn’t going to lay down a full house, but I could have just check/called or bet/called and saved quite a bit. On the other hand, if he had two pair (which is what I put him on, maybe 3 tens), I was leaving a lot of money on the table. I think I should have slowed down a bit when he capped the turn and I definitely shouldn’t have gone crazy on the river.
Shortly after that, I bid Pauly and Maudie farewell (thanks for stopping by, it was fun while it lasted!) and went and poured myself a nice big pour of 14 year old Oban Scotch. I sat in front of the TV and pulled up an episode of MacGyver from the TiVO to dull my pain (it was an episode with Mitzi Kapture from what was one of my other favorite shows, Silk Stalkings, so it was all good). The Scotch was smooth and so was Mac, mullet and all. Plus, after the beating I took I couldn’t bear to watch the “Best of 2003 WSOP” or any poker for that matter.
I’ve now got 300 hands left to clear by the 26th. If I break even on those I’ll still come out ahead, but man, I could use a good night.
Canterbury On Wednesday
I’ll be at Canterbury on Wednesday the 22nd from sometime mid-afternoon and into the evening. There’s going to be a 2+2 get together at 7pm at the end of the bar. I’m taking the afternoon off of work to finish up some shopping and to get there a bit early. The heavy hitters from the 15/30 and 30/60 game are planning on some drunken 3/6 play that night. Their plan is to go after the people who try to be “pros” at 3/6 and destroy them. For that reason, I’ll be playing 4/8 unless I’m getting destroyed there and then I’ll go home and drink. Heavily. So far there are about 20 2+2′ers who have confirmed, so it should be a good meet and greet. Since I couldn’t make it to Vegas this is as close as I can get to meeting others and it should be fun.
See the thread at 2+2 for more info if you’re interested. Look for me, I’ll be wearing black Ferrari cap and will be surrounded by pyramids of blue chips.
